Nerd Check-In

23 Apr

Unlike other of my goals for 2012 I have been killing it on my goal to read 36 books this year. KILLING IT.

We’re almost at the end of the 4th month of the year, so 1/3 in and I’ve read 18 books. Yes, that’s half of my goal completed. I’m even thinking of upping my goal to 50 books. Nerd gone wild.

I use Good Reads, which I absolutely love, so if you want a new social media outlet get on board and let’s compare shelves. Favorite books so far this year: When the Emperor was Divine by Julie Otsuka, The Sherlockian by Graham Moore and Bossypants by Tina Fey.

Any book recommendations I should add to my to-read shelf and/or holds list for the library? Yes, that’s right, I use the library. Old school nerd style.

Running and Books – A Nerd’s Life

1 Aug

Yep, that pretty much sums up what I’m into these days.

I’m training for my second 1/2 marathon this October – 10/16/11 in SF in case you are interested in spectating – and while I am well behind where I should be I have actually been consistent since I started back up with running. Ultimately I think my experience will be better than it was last year but I’m really looking to get in a PR in May at the Rock ‘n Roll 1/2 in PDX. But enough about running…let’s get into the nerdier things in life.

Books. I set the goal to read 30 books this year. Factoring in that I am living in a new city, at a new job and well just in general life seems to be busier than ever I realized 30 books was a decent goal. In the past couple years I tried 24 books a year (completed) and 36 books a year (derailed) so 30 feels like a middle ground that should be achievable. Also factoring in I live literally 1.5 blocks from a library I felt it was great and I’d be right on track.

Oh wait, it’s 8/1 and I’ve only read 12 books! GAH! Thanks to the goal I set on Good Reads I’m 5 books behind pace or 18% behind my goal. F. Know any good books I need to read to get my to-read list fuller and maybe re-inspire my reading needs? I mean, let’s be honest, I’m way too competitive to let this slide but new book recos are always welcome!

You know you are a nerd when…

12 Jan

I’ve always been pretty open about the fact that I am a nerd. I’ve certainly never hid the fact that I like technology, I love to read, I push my social nerd websites focused around books on people (goodreads.com) and I more than anything like being alone, wearing sweatpants, reading books and dorking out.

Which might explain why I’m still single (I’m a great catch – I promise) but that is neither here nor there.

You know you are a nerd when you get pumped about a Groupon for a book store, buy the limit of groupons they allow for one person, have 3 – yes 3 – gift cards to another book store and yes, have multiple coupons to yet a third book store in your email account flagged as high priority so you don’t forget they are there and use them before you expire.

Yep, that’s my life. Just one episode of sexy adventures after another stocking up on hardbacks, trade papers, paperbacks, used copies, new copies but never, never books on tape or ebooks on a kindle/nook/iPad. I’m a traditionalist and somethings will always be sacred. Like dog earring pages or flipping through the pages to set your “just one more chapter before bed” or “15 pages to being halfway done” short term goals.

So yes, I am a nerd. But I’m a proud nerd. Want to dork out about books? Hit up the comment section.

Best New Books

29 Mar

I plan on starting a revolution here on my blog where I start posting more frequently with shorter amounts of content. Just to mix it up a bit.

I’m a nerd. I like reading. I like books. I use the library. I belong to GoodReads.

Who’s got new books that I need to add to my list?!? You share with me and I’ll pass on some of my new must reads as well.

It was bound to happen…

I’ve openly admitted I am a big fan of the library. The library has single handedly helped me achieve my reading goals/new years resolutions for 2008 & 2009. I mean really, when something helps you achieve your goals how can you not being a fan.

Let’s put it this way, would Karl Malone achieved the stats and career he had with out the assistance of John Stockton? The answer is no my friends.

For all those helpful benefits the library has provided me (and my iTunes library) and all the wonderful free PR and word of mouth I have spread about it how am I re-paid? By treking to my local library branch only to find one of my hotly anticipated hold items is NO WHERE TO BE FOUND.

WTF library? I look on the hold shelf. No book. I go to the checkout desk and inform the gentleman that I have a book on hold that is no where to found on the shelf. He then obviously doesn’t beleive me because he goes to look for himself. SUPRISE. I was STILL correct sir, no book on the shelf.

He then does some magic nerdery on the computer machine and checks the hold shelf where CD’s and DVD’s are. Oh wait, he finds some HORROR movie with the hold tag in it for my book. I am not a scary/horror movie fan.

He then checks the movie to see who that actually belongs to with the smart thought that maybe there was just a mistake and that person has their hold tag in my book. Back to the hold book shelf he goes. Epic fail. Still no book.

At the end of this debacle the library gentleman put me first in line of 53 people to receive the next available copy. Which he noted should only be in a day or two.

That would all be fine and good EXCEPT the library I use is the one closest to my work, downtown, and they will be closed for maintenance repairs Monday – Wednesday next week.

So in a week I should get the book I was supposed to have today. Build me up & break me down library.

A little life update

3 Apr

It was brought to my attention that my blogging frequency has slowed a bit. Apparently there are readers that I’ve been neglecting. Here are some of the reasons for why my blogging has slowed down:

1. Work has been crazy busy and after stressful/busy days in front of a computer I max out and can’t get myself to blog at night. Simple solution you say: Blog from work – ugh, I wish I had that kind of time.

2.¬† I’ve turned the nerd-o-meter to full blast and have been reading much more frequently. What used to be right before calling The Sox Fan/going to bed reading it’s now become weekend wake-up lay in bed reading until mid-day or post work/pre gym reading. I also have a stack of books on my kitchen counter I’m planning to read. I don’t cook much so the kitchen is a perfectly natural place to store books in waiting. Don’t judge me.

3. I signed up for Netflix. After hearing for over a year how magical it is to some of my friends lives I decided to give it a shot. Mostly because I was ill and didn’t want to physically go to the video store, set up an account at the location closest to my home and I know I would forget to take them back or they would be out of what I wanted to see when I went in. I have to admit I do miss the instant gratification from picking a movie from the shelf and bringing it home. But what I don’t miss is going to the store, finding a movie and then dealing with the defeat when they are all out. Plus, I love getting mail. Love it.

4. I have a backlog of magazines that are not getting processed/read as quickly as they need to. I for some reason have to take a magazine to the gym when I do cardio. It’s usually US Weekly – before you judge let me note this – they are the perfect length for an hour of cardio and are mindless so I don’t have to worry about getting really engrossed into an article only to mis-step and hurt myself while falling of a machine. Anywho, between the US Weekly’s I compulsively buy at the market and the two subscriptions I have there is also a magazine stack in the kitchen.

So there, in the midst of being more scholarly and athletic my blogging has suffered. My bad.

Although now I am using my blog as a way to procrastinate on packing. Ugh – I hate packing. Back when I was traveling every month for the old company I was a pro, I could pack a bag for a week internationally in about 15 minutes. I’m a little rusty these days – the first step tonight will be unpacking my suitcase from my last trip to Vegas…oops.

That’s right friends, I’m headed back to Sin City – this time I will be there for work. I think there might be time to fit in some shenanigans¬† – the number one story I think will be me renting and driving a 15 passenger van on and around The Strip. Yikes – think good thoughts.
