Savvy 6, Part 5

6 Dec

That’s right, it’s time for another installment of Savvy 6. I’ve been adding a lot of new music (not that iTunes will decide to showcase it on this round of shuffle) but the library has an extensive list of artists and I do have to give the people of Multnomah County some props for their prompt check in and check out of CD’s. Gotta love your tax payer dollars at work.

“1234” – Feist
Most people will recognize this song from Apple iPOD commercials. While I do enjoy me some folksy music I shockingly acquired this one from a Mix CD given to me at Urban Outfitters. Yes, I am that trendy. While I am not standard urban hipster I do enjoy their dresses selection (awesome) and with purchases they send customers out the door with new music sample CD’s. So thank you Urban Outfitters for your fun fashions and willingness to expose your customers to new music. Another great reason to make UO a stop on your holiday shopping trips.

“The Background” – Third Eye Blind
Third Eye Blind always reminds me of high school. This CD was one of my favorites and I can honestly say I do not have any negative memories of any of the songs which in that highly emotional/dramatic/hormonal time of your life I think is saying something. There is something really powerful about it that strikes a cord with me. I always loved the following lyrics and this is one of my all time favorite sad/reflective songs.

The plans I make still have you in them
‘Cause you come swimmin’ into view
And I’m hanging on your words like I always used to do
The words they use so lightly, I only feel for you

“Bouncing Off The Walls” – Sugarcult
Probably one of the better known Sugarcult songs – for those pop culture addicts out there you might recognize it from National Lampoon’s Van Wilder movie. Yes, the movie staring Ryan Reynolds and Tara Reid. While this song was never going to win any Grammy’s it’s a fun rock-out, jump around fun one. Plus, since it’s short it’s the perfect length to get crazy to and then catch your breath.

“Don’t Stop Believin'” – Flight 409
Yes, this is a cover of the Journey classic. While some may say never mess with a classic I would beg to recommend they take an exception to the rule for this one. Flight 409 updates it with a little more rockin’ vibe and maybe it’s the alternative rocker singer or maybe it’s the new harder guitar riffs but I might even like this cover better than the original. Thank you to Apple iTunes Genius for this recommendation.

“Look After You” – The Fray
Ah yes, another sad heartbreaker of a song. I know people loved this song because it was on Grey’s Anatomy. I always thought of this song separately from TV and to me it always seemed like a set of wedding vows set to music. While I certainly wouldn’t complain if some fantastic man wrote this song for me it always seemed like it should of been a duet. At least in my mind. Best lines:

It’s always have and never hold
You’ve begun to feel like home
What’s mine is yours to leave or take
What’s mine is yours to make your own

“Many the Miles” – Sara Bareilles
I really enjoy Sara Bareilles’ unique voice. She just has a great tone to her songs and I like that she plays piano and sings which is a great set of skills for a musician in my mind. This song reminds of me of my former job at The Company. Granted I didn’t know of or listen to her while working there and traveling all over the world. But when you travel as much as I did you kind of become overly dependent on your iPod (or at least I did) since you are constantly waiting…in airports, in cabs, on trains, in hotels, etc. I don’t know if it’s her great lyrics or just her style but I always find myself being able to clear my head when I listen to her. Plus it’s a song about traveling to get to someone/somewhere – get it.
